20.7.19 - from our Bulloo River bush camp at Quilpie heading sadly South.

Up super early (read the watch wrong so up at 5.30 not 6.45) but got up, toileted, partly packed up, fire going, more packing before Steve appeared.

Time for a coffee before the pot of tea and thermos and breaky.

My tent was dewy when I got up but by the time I went over to pack up I had ice spots - every drop had turned to ice at that cold period just before the sun appears. So I was dusting off ice which flaked off like snow.

Cuppa tea around the fire, sun rising almost.

Breakfast in a cup. Deconstructed Mug Muffin - prepared the night before.

A very uneven campsite- we would have driven past in daylight.

You can’t see it but believe me the drops of dew have frozen and are now ice dots all over.

When I brushed them off it was like snow.

Ice sitting on the seam.
This meant packing up a wet tent - bummer!!!

Purple star grass
Some deep purple grass

Perfect angles

A pea at the camp.

The same plant we’ve seen lots of. Here the seed pods have dried out a bit and are working on spreading

The ‘ball’ has deflated a bit and it’s drying out.

Now sitting ready to blow and seed.
In the cold hard light of day it’s clear to see where the flood waters have rushed through / taking all before them, swirling and eddying to create holes and channels etc.
A bunch of bottles and debris in one channel.

A good luck beer perhaps

More stuff in the golden sunrise hour.
More detritus.

The channel cut by the waters.

An old piece of  something

Our camp.

An interesting looking plant with nasty thorny seeds.

The moon through the trees.

The channel where the water has swept it clean

Just up the road on the way back to road was a crossing and water either side

looking up the Bulloo River at the crossing.

This big old tree has been bashed around over the years of things hitting it.

From Quilpie to Cunnamulla via Eulo where we did a quick loo stop. Then into Cunnamulla for fuel and lunch.

Mary, Phil and Kate leave us today to head towards Dubbo to visit Phil’s brother.

A view along the way.

The Main hotel in Cunnamulla

Our double selfie with the Cunnamulla Fella.

Kate and Phil doing the Beatles walk.
There were lots of flowers today and birds on roadkill and in trees waiting to return to roadkill, but we were on a mission to get some kms under our belt and unable to stop. Mary and I decided we need to do this area again with time for stopping whenever there is something to see and also at the towns along the way. A later discussion with Meg had her in agreement too.

Lots of swathes of wildflowers- yellow and white between Cunnamulla and Bourke.

More of the flowers and growth.

More of the flowers - yellow with white ones running in the channel

More of the yellow flowers.

Looking up the Darling from the wharf at Bourke.

Last selfie as Mary, Phil and Kate leave us to head towards Dubbo today b

We have a few pairs in the group. Redback boot print in the red sand

An bad pic of an interesting building in Bourke

Police station

At some point in the day we determined that we’d get to Hillston. In Bourke Meg called and arranged accommodation at a motel for tonight. Thank goodness. She forgot to ask how much but I think we would have paid anything.

We fuelled in Cobar and called ahead to let the motel know where we were. They advised that we should eat in Cobar as there is nothing in Hillston.

The 254kms from Cobar to Hillston was all in the fading light. So we were all alert to watching for Roos and goats.

Thankfully only one roo came close and Stef avoided it well in the lead. We saw heaps and heaps and mostly on the right side. Our driving lights were invaluable. We arrived about 9.00pm. The owner was on for
a chat, he and his family had been to Parkes to the Dish for the 50th Anniversary celebrations of Man on the Moon. Then he was encouraging us not to order breakfast as he had to get up and make it. We agreed on 7.30.

Ahhh the shower.

And a real bed.

Ska in a real car park.

Pretty excited about a shower.

Before shower - dirty hair, sad face.

Clean and smiling and clean gear after the shower

Turned the TV on to watch the end of The Dish.
